Daniel 10:1

Daniel 10 opens in the third year of Cyrus king of Persia, about 536/535 B.C. Babylon has fallen, Cyrus has permitted the Jews to return, and the Medo-Persian period is now the historical setting. Yet the story is not simple triumph. The decree has gone out, but restoration is contested, slow, and burdened by opposition.

This is only a few years after the first year of Darius in Daniel 9 and after the return decree of Cyrus. Daniel has seen Babylon fall and has prayed over Jerusalem's desolation, but the work of restoration remains contested. The timing helps explain his mourning: fulfilled prophecy has opened a door, yet the people of God still need heavenly help.

The line says a thing was revealed to Daniel, whose Babylonian name Belteshazzar is still remembered. The message is true, and the appointed conflict is great. Daniel understands the thing and has understanding of the vision. This introduces the final revelation of the book, more than one isolated chapter.

Daniel 10 is the prologue to the vision that continues through Daniel 11 and reaches its conclusion in Daniel 12. Chapter 10 reveals the unseen conflict behind history; chapter 11 traces the earthly conflict of kingdoms; chapter 12 shows Michael standing, the time of trouble, resurrection, sealing, and final hope. The final unit must be read together.

This passage also looks back to Daniel 8 and 9. Persia and Greece will return to view, the same powers identified in Daniel 8. Gabriel's earlier work of giving understanding prepares for this final disclosure. Daniel has learned that prophecy, sanctuary, restoration, and spiritual conflict belong together.

The devotional force is strong from the first verse. Daniel has seen empires rise and fall, but he still seeks understanding. Old age has not made him careless, and fulfilled prophecy has not made him passive. The more clearly he sees God's control of history, the more seriously he prays about God's work in history.
