Daniel 2:1

Daniel 2 opens after the young Hebrews have entered public service. Nebuchadnezzar dreams, his spirit is troubled, and sleep leaves him. The king who commands armies cannot command his own mind. The passage begins with royal anxiety because God is about to show that the future of the world does not belong to Babylon.

The setting is early in Nebuchadnezzar's reign, after the training test of Daniel 1 and before Daniel's long public ministry unfolds. Babylon is still rising in confidence, yet God gives the whole sweep of world history while the first kingdom still looks unchallenged. That timing matters: prophecy is not hindsight dressed as religion, but God's word over history before human power can see its own limits.

Dreams mattered deeply in the ancient court. Kings surrounded themselves with specialists who claimed skill in omens, rituals, and interpretation. Nebuchadnezzar therefore responds as a Babylonian ruler would: he wants the meaning of the dream from the official wisdom system of his empire.

Daniel 1 has just said that Daniel and his friends were wiser than the magicians and astrologers. Daniel 2 immediately tests that claim. Human learning has its place, but this crisis requires revelation. The dream is more than personal; it becomes the first great outline of world history in the book.
