Daniel 11:1

Daniel 11 opens by looking back to the first year of Darius the Mede, about 539/538 B.C., the transition year after Babylon fell. The final vision itself was received in the third year of Cyrus in Daniel 10, about 536/535 B.C., but the messenger begins by remembering how he stood to confirm and strengthen Darius at the start of Medo-Persian rule. The empire changed hands on earth, but heaven was already working behind the visible throne.

The line belongs with Daniel 10. There Daniel saw that prayer, angels, Persia, Greece, and the conflict over God's people were connected. Chapter 11 will name kings and describe wars, but it begins by showing that unseen ministry stands behind public history. God does not abandon His people when a new empire takes control.

Darius the Mede belongs to Daniel's Medo-Persian setting and is best identified here with Cyaxares II, a Median ruler associated with Cyrus. The surviving evidence remains incomplete, so that identification should be held with care. Daniel's central point is firm: Babylon has fallen, the next kingdom is ruling, and heaven is active in the new political order.

The passage asks for patient faith. Much of Daniel 11 is intricate because history itself is intricate, but the opening verse gives the reader a settled center. God is not reacting late to events; He is already strengthening, restraining, and guiding before His people can see the outcome.
