Daniel 8:1

Daniel 8 begins in the third year of Belshazzar, commonly placed about 551/550 B.C. Babylon is still standing but already near its fall. Daniel 7 came in Belshazzar's first year; this vision follows roughly two years later and narrows the prophetic lens. Babylon is no longer shown as the first beast or head of gold because Daniel 8 begins with the next power that will rule after Babylon.

That setting matters. Belshazzar will die when Babylon falls in 539 B.C., yet God is already showing Daniel what will come through Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome, and the sanctuary conflict reaching to the time of the end. Daniel 9 will come about twelve years later, after Babylon has fallen, and it will return to the unresolved time burden of this passage. Prophecy does not wait until empires understand their weakness. God can speak of their replacement while they still sit on the throne.

Daniel says the vision appeared to him after the one that appeared at the first. The phrase ties chapter 8 to chapter 7. Daniel 7 showed the beast sequence, the little horn, the heavenly judgment, and the kingdom given to the Son of Man. Daniel 8 revisits the same sweep but with sanctuary language, named kingdoms, and the 2300 evenings-mornings.

The passage moves from world history to Christ's ministry in heaven. Its concern is not date curiosity by itself, but the rule of God over kingdoms, the exposure of counterfeit worship, the restoration of truth, and the sanctuary work of the true Prince.

Symbols and Motifs

The word vision is important. In Daniel 8, writers often distinguish between chazon, the broader vision, and mareh, the more specific vision or appearance connected especially with the 2300 evenings-mornings. Chazon refers to the whole vision from Medo-Persia to the cleansing of the sanctuary, while mareh focuses more narrowly on the time element of the evenings-mornings.
