Daniel 5:1

Daniel 5 opens with Belshazzar making a great feast for a thousand of his lords and drinking wine before them. The scene is bright with royal display, but it is spiritually dark. Babylon is celebrating while judgment is already near.

Historically, the passage belongs to the final night of Babylon's rule in 539 B.C. The city appears secure, wealthy, and entertained, yet Medo-Persian power is at the gates. Daniel wants the reader to feel the contradiction: a kingdom can look most confident when it is most exposed.

The setting also prepares the passage's moral atmosphere. Belshazzar is not seeking counsel, prayer, repentance, or remembrance of the God who humbled Nebuchadnezzar. He gathers the court around spectacle, and the banquet becomes the frame for Babylon's final public act of pride.

Historically, Babylon's security was tied to its walls, gates, and the Euphrates River running through it. Ancient accounts describe the Medo-Persian strategy as lowering or diverting the river so troops could enter along the riverbed while the city was distracted. That background gives the feast its tension: Belshazzar celebrates while the means of conquest is already being prepared.
