Daniel 9:1

Daniel 9 opens in the first year of Darius, the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, about 539/538 B.C. Babylon has fallen, Medo-Persia now rules, and Daniel is living in the same transition described at the end of Daniel 5 and throughout Daniel 6.

The timing matters because Daniel 8 came in the third year of Belshazzar, about 551/550 B.C. Roughly twelve years have passed since Daniel saw the ram, goat, little horn, sanctuary trampling, and the 2300 evenings-mornings. Daniel 8 ended with him sick and astonished because the vision was not yet understood; Daniel 9 shows that the burden has not disappeared with time.

Chapter 9 therefore does not begin a disconnected subject. Daniel is still carrying the sanctuary and time question from Daniel 8, but now he carries it after Babylon has actually fallen. Jeremiah's seventy years are nearing their close, Jerusalem is still desolate, and Daniel needs to understand how the return from exile relates to the longer vision of sanctuary restoration.

Darius the Mede should not be confused with Darius I Hystaspes, the later Persian king. The interpretation favored here identifies him with Cyaxares II, a Median ruler associated with Cyrus in the transfer of Babylon to Medo-Persia. Because the surviving evidence is meager and ambiguous, modern proposals involving Gubaru or another transitional administrator may be discussed as possibilities without displacing that favored view or being stated as certain.

The passage also changes the atmosphere from vision to prayer. Daniel 8 left the prophet overwhelmed by symbols and time. Daniel 9 shows him searching the written Word. God often answers one revelation by sending His servant back to Scripture already given.

The line places prophecy inside ordinary faithfulness. Daniel has lived long enough to see Babylon fall, but he does not become passive. The fall of one empire does not finish God's work. He still turns to Scripture and prayer because the sanctuary, Jerusalem, and God's people remain on his heart.
