Daniel 6:1

Daniel 6 begins after the fall of Babylon, in the Medo-Persian transition around 539/538 B.C. The feast of Daniel 5 is over, Belshazzar is dead, and Medo-Persian administration now orders the kingdom. Darius sets 120 princes over the realm, showing that the new empire is more than a military conquest but a governing power with structure, oversight, and provincial control.

The identity of Darius the Mede should be handled with care. Daniel calls him Darius the Median in Daniel 5:31, says he received the kingdom at about sixty-two years old, and later describes him as the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes. He should not be confused with Darius I Hystaspes, the later Persian king. The interpretation favored here identifies him with Cyaxares II, the son of Astyages and a Median ruler associated with Cyrus. Contemporary evidence remains meager and ambiguous, so proposals involving Gubaru or Gobryas may still be considered as modern reconstructions rather than settled fact.

The point of the line is not to turn the passage into a historical puzzle. Daniel wants the reader to see that Babylon has fallen, but God's servant remains. The God who gave Jehoiakim into Babylon's hand in Daniel 1 and gave Babylon to Medo-Persia in Daniel 5 is still guiding history. This same transition also becomes the setting for Daniel 9, where Daniel prays over Jeremiah's seventy years while the restoration question presses on his heart.

The historical discussion should actually strengthen the reader's confidence in the narrative rather than distract from it. Daniel is careful with details: Darius is Median, he receives the kingdom, he is older, and he belongs to the first stage after Babylon's fall. Those details fit a transitional administration rather than a vague legendary king.

The passage also prepares for Daniel 9, where the first year of Darius becomes the setting for Daniel's prayer over Jeremiah's seventy years. The same transition that places Daniel under Medo-Persia also awakens hope for restoration.

A change of empire does not cancel calling. Daniel has lived through exile, court education, royal dreams, idolatrous pressure, and Babylon's collapse. Now he must be faithful under a new administration. Mature faith does not depend on a familiar environment.
